Periodontics (Gum Treatment)

Healthy gums are the foundation of healthy teeth. Periodontics covers the prevention and treatment of gum disease and gum recession.

Periodontics (Gum Treatment)

Common symptoms of gum disease

Bruxism (teeth grinding), smoking, stress, pregnancy, mouth breathing, diabetes and some medications can all worsen gum problems. Regular check-ups are essential.

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing.
  • Red, swollen, inflamed gums.
  • Pain and sensitivity in the teeth and gums.
  • Increased tooth mobility.
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth.
  • Gum recession, leaving teeth more exposed.
  • A metallic taste in the mouth.

Periodontal disease

Often starting with bleeding or reddened gums, periodontal disease can develop into serious bacterial infection. Left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss and has been linked to heart problems, diabetes and other conditions. Early treatment and good hygiene are essential.

Scaling

Removal of tartar to prevent plaque build-up and reduce gum inflammation. Usually one session, without anaesthetic.

Curettage

Deep cleaning of periodontal pockets below the gum line, under local anaesthetic; may need several sessions.

Periodontal surgery

If needed after curettage, surgery under local anaesthetic cleans the gums thoroughly.

Keeping your gums healthy

  • Brush twice a day — after breakfast and before bed.
  • Floss daily between your teeth.
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash.
  • Brush your tongue to remove bacteria that cause bad breath.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleaning.

Gum recession

Gum recession is when the gums pull back and expose more of the tooth root. This can cause sensitivity, an unattractive appearance and oral health problems.

Common causes:

  • Plaque and tartar build-up
  • Gum infection
  • Incorrect or overly aggressive brushing
  • Dental malposition
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Incorrect use of toothpicks
  • Genetics and ageing
  • Nail biting

Treating gum recession

Treatment depends on the cause and severity. It may include treating the underlying cause, gum grafting or plastic surgery, correcting tooth position, and regular follow-up visits.
